Dr. Paul H. King, PhD, PE is a founding professor and Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University.

Education and early career: Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dr. King pursued his early education at the Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University), completing both his BS in Engineering Sciences and MS in Engineering. He later earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1968.

Academic and professional legacy: Vanderbilt University Tenure: Joining the faculty in September 1968, Dr. King dedicated over 43 years of active service teaching across Mechanical, Electrical, and Biomedical Engineering departments. He chaired the Biomedical Engineering department for 5 years.

Design Instruction: A pioneer in the discipline, he initiated and instructed the mandatory senior-year capstone design sequence, supervising over 1,280 students across more than 525 projects.

Engineering Licensure: He holds a registered Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of Tennessee, granted in 1973.

Medical Research & Expert Services: He has actively collaborated with medical departments including anesthesiology, radiology, and orthopedics. Dr. King is also highly recognized for his forensic engineering investigations and expert witness services in medical device design.

Publications: Dr. King is a prominent textbook author, notably co-authoring Design of Biomedical Devices and Systems, a staple academic textbook widely utilized across global biomedical engineering engineering curricula.
